We all take shortcuts to work sometimes. They’re usually uneventful, but for Malissa Sergent Lewis, one shortcut shifted the course of a puppy’s life.

Driving in her car, Malissa, who lives in Kentucky, spotted a small trash bag in the road. That’s not entirely unusual — but this trash bag was moving.

She told The Dodo:

“I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, ‘Did I just see that bag move?’ The closer I got, I realized it was moving. I could hardly wrap my mind around that. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out.”

She could have kept driving. Instead, she chose to save a life.

The puppy inside the bag clearly knew a human was nearby. He did his best to walk over to Malissa, even though he was trapped inside of a tightly knotted plastic bag.

She didn’t know what was in the bag, but she knew it was up to her to save whatever it was. Malissa and her entire family will be forever grateful that she did.

Here’s what she found.

An adorable eight week old puppy!

While it is impossible to imagine who would do such a thing to a defenseless pup, what matters is that he found a human who will cherish him. In fact, Malissa took him to work with her right after rescuing him.

After work, Malissa and her sons took the tiny dog to a vet. Surprisingly, he was healthy — he was also happy. The trauma he’d experienced earlier in the day didn’t stick with him. He instantly bonded with Malissa and her two boys. Now appropriately named Hefty, the pup was full of tail wags — all because he knew he’d found his forever home.

Not only did Malissa change this pup’s life, he changed her life and the lives of her sons. They are all so happy together.

Malissa told Little Things,

“[Hefty] is playful. We were just talking about how resilient he was. He romps around playing with his new toys. He’s good-natured. Even the day that I brought him into the school where I work the day I found him, he was precious.”

At school, Hefty found his way (okay, he may have had help from the guidance counselor) to a second grade class, where he charmed all of the kids with his cutie-pie antics.

Authorities have opened an investigation and are looking for the person who abandoned Hefty. We hope they find whoever is responsible. And we wish Hefty and his new family the happiest of times!
