Last Tuesday, Levi, a three-legged pit bull, took a bullet for his family when an armed intruder entered an unlocked back door, reported the Gazette Xtra. The family, who live in Janesville, Wisconsin, have had Levi since they found him abandoned as a puppy — and he is now fifteen. This senior dog, who the family reports is normally friendly with strangers, growled at the intruder after he ordered Darcy Cherry and her boyfriend, Bob Stenzel, to the floor, according to the Gazette Xtra.
The intruder told Cherry and Stenzel to call off the dog, but when they tried and Levi didn’t listen, the intruder shot Levi in the head. The bullet lodged in the top of Levi’s neck, according to the Gazette Xtra. After shooting the dog, the intruder fled the home and Cherry and Stenzel were able to call 911.
Levi was treated by an Emergency Veterinary Service, and has a tube in place to drain the gunshot wound, but survived and is in good spirits, according to the Gazette Xtra.
Police are still investigating this incident. Anyone with information about this case should contact the Janesville Police Department at 608-755-3100 or Janesville Crime Stoppers at 608-756-3636.
